Our week has been an interesting one. Mrs. Wilson has been delivering and guiding the instruction in the classroom while I have been administering the PALS test. The students have been learning about the short a sound as in apple. They can identify it as the beginning sound and are learning to identify it in the middle of words. Our Superkid friend, Alf loves to camp and go on adventures, and we have been learning about the types of equipment he takes with him as he packs his backpack to camp out. We are practicing writing the letters that go with the sounds we know as we write sentences. This week we wrote about colored acorns on a four-box matrix. We are learning the matrix location words upper left, upper right, lower left, and lower right. We are also practicing tracking the print as we read and hunting for certain letters. The next time you are out somewhere with your child, play I Spy, but spy letters instead of colors!
Our math activities this week have involved triangles, diagonal lines and counting with number identification. To challenge the students we are also matching number words. The students made a candy corn counting game which they are bringing home today. There are several ways to play this game. The simplest way is to match the number with the amount of candy corn pieces. You can also play one more than/one less than with the numbers, and of course matching the number words as well. Have fun with it!
This week as we have continued our study of the characteristics of fall, we focused on the ways animals are adapting to the changes in our climate. The students know that animals have to get ready for winter. Many animals are eating extra as they prepare to sleep through the winter. Some animals are collecting and storing food to get them through the winter, and some animals, particularly birds have to move to a new home where the air is warmer. People are getting ready by switching out their summer clothes for warmer clothes, preparing their homes for the colder seasons by chopping and stacking wood, sealing windows, and cleaning our flower beds.

Next week will be a very exciting time in kindergarten! Our color of the week will be orange. We will be learning about the life cycle of pumpkins in preparation of our first field trip on Thursday, October 24th to Valley Star Farm. We are planning to build scarecrows on Wednesday morning, so please feel free to join us if you can! Please send in the items for scarecrow building by Tuesday so we will know what we have to work with. This activity is always lots of fun. We will have a Harvest Hoedown on Friday afternoon to celebrate all that we have learned about fall.
